Hands up if you’ve found yourself Googling “mooncake calories” in an attempt to stop yourself from gorging on mooncakes like there’s no tomorrow.*

In the lead-up to Mooncake Festival – a.k.a. Mid-Autumn Festival, on 24 Sep 2018 – almost every hotel and bakery will be pushing out their own mooncake collections. But unless you’re a die-hard fan of a particular brand, it can be pretty hard to decide which to go for.

Ultimately it depends on what type of mooncake you fancy – whether you go crazy over snow skin mooncakes, creamily pungent durian mooncakes, trendy lava mooncakes or traditional baked mooncakes.

Here’s a quick guide to the best mooncakes in Singapore and where to find them:

Best for… Where to buy
Snow skin mooncakes Raffles Hotel, Ritz Carlton
Durian mooncakes Goodwood Park
Traditional baked mooncakes Shangri La
Unusual / over-the-top mooncakes Peony Jade

Ritz Carlton mooncakes mainly come in snow skin varieties – try the green tea (can’t go wrong with that) and the unique martini flavours. Some of their snow skin mooncakes even have yolks.

The packaging is particularly pretty – the boxes look like jewellery boxes, with the mooncakes sitting in little slide-out “drawers”. Baked mooncakes come in a deep red box while snow skin mooncakes come in a rose gold one.

However, if you’re planning to impress the Empress Dowager in your life with the $118 Shangri La Signature Mini Baked Custard Mooncake with Bird’s Nest… it’s unfortunately not eligible for the 15% off discount. Sobbles.

If you’ve ever been to Hong Kong, you would definitely have come across the ubiquitous Maxim’s Cakes, a.k.a. Mei Xin – the HK version of BreadTalk. Every Mooncake Festival, Mei Xin comes up with a bazillion different flavours and HongKongers proceed to go absolutely apeshit.

Thanks to globalisation, you don’t have to fly to Hong Kong and brave the late-summer weather. There’s now a supplier for Mei Xin mooncakes in Singapore. And guess what? They’re pretty affordable too, at under $60 a box – some are even less than $50.

There are way too many mooncake flavours to even list here, but here are the more interesting ones. They have some of the cheapest durian mooncakes in Singapore too, at a super affordable $52.60 a box. But I don’t know what the quality is like.

Starbucks mooncake 2018 price list

Finally, for those who want to buy mooncakes to feed their Instagram more than their stomachs, the prettiest mooncake set in town has got to be Starbucks mooncakes.

Each hexagonal box has a super-trendy galaxy design, and contains a moon lantern with LED light, plus Starbucks vouchers inside. There are only two flavours to choose from: either the assorted flavours one or the Hong Kong-style custard mooncakes.

Note though that Starbucks mooncake boxes contain fewer mooncakes (6 mini mooncakes instead of the usual 8), so it’s not really that cheap. Still, you can use a Starbucks Card to get a 15% discount, which makes each box a reasonable $42.50.

Mooncake flavour Type Price
Custard Mooncake Box (available 29 Aug onwards) Baked $49.90 (6pcs)
Assorted (White Lotus Paste with Egg Yolk / Starbucks Coffee with Walnut / Green Tea with Red Bean) Baked $49.90 (6pcs)

I used to be MoneyDumb. I hung out at H&M every day and thought that a $50 lunch set was a good deal. These days, I spend my time researching the crap out of life and trying to maximise utility on micro-decisions. I'm not sure if that's an improvement.
