Allianz is best known to those who have existing car loans. But for the rest of us BMW customers (Bus, MRT, Walk), there seemingly aren’t too many reasons to bother with this insurance company.

But Allianz actually has travel insurance, which all of us will need at some point unless we plan to stay trapped on this island forever. Let’s see how effective their plan is at saving people from disaster while on holiday.

1. Allianz Travel Insurance: Summary

Allianz’s travel insurance is rather unimaginatively called Allianz Travel. It comes in three tiers:

  • Allianz Travel Bronze
  • Allianz Travel Silver
  • Allianz Travel Platinum

Depending on the duration and the number of people travelling, you can choose between these three types of plans:

  • Single trip – One trip of up to 180 days
  • Annual multi-trip – Unlimited trips of up to 90 days each
  • Family – Covers you and dependent children and/or family members traveling together, available for single trip and annual multi-trip

The travel insurance plan is actually underwritten by Tokio Marine. Allianz just provides all the peripheral services like customer care and claims administration.

2. Allianz Travel Insurance Coverage

Here’s what you get when you buy Allianz Travel Insurance. All quotations are pre-discount and based on a week-long trip.

Allianz Travel Insurance Bronze Silver Platinum

Price (Asia) $64 $113 $158
Price (Worldwide) $112 $177 $241
Overseas Medical Expenses $200,000 $500,000 $1,000,000
Emergency Medical Evacuation Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited
Personal Accident (Death, TPD) $100,000 $200,000

Trip Cancellation $5,000 $10,000 $15,000
Baggage Delay $500 $1,000 $1,400
Baggage Loss/Damage (reimbursement of expenses, minimum 6 hour delay) $3,000 $5,000 $7,000
Outdoor Adventure No No No
Covid-19 Yes Yes Yes

If you’ve looked at any other travel insurance plans, you might have noticed that the higher tier plans (Silver and Platinum) are pretty average compared to the higher tier plans from other insurers.

To cite some examples for comparison, AMEX travel insurance’s three plans offer $500,000, $1,000,000 and $2,000,000 worth of overseas medical expense coverage respectively. Meanwhile, Tokio Marine travel insurance’s two tiers of travel insurance offers $300,000 and $500,000 worth of overseas medical coverage.

The price point for Allianz’s plan is on the high side. Considering they don’t even cover you for outdoor adventure activities, this might not be the most value for money plan out there.

3. Allianz Travel Insurance Covid-19 Coverage

Allianz Travel Insurance offers some Covid-19 coverage, as follows

Allianz Travel Insurance Covid Cover Bronze Silver Platinum
Overseas Medical Expenses $200,000 $500,000 $1,000,000
Emergency Medical Evacuation Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited
Repatriation Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited
Hospitalisation Cash Benefit
Quarantine Cash Benefit
Trip Cancellation $5,000 $10,000 $15,000

The plan is rather generous in that its claim limits for Covid-related medical and evacuation coverage is no less than for non-Covid-related claims.

But they don’t offer cash benefits for hospitalisation or quarantine, which is offered by some other insurance companies like Singlife with Aviva travel insurance and AMEX travel insurance.

4. Allianz Travel Insurance Extreme Sports

Adrenaline junkies should take note of what sporting and adventure activities are covered by the plan:

Outdoor Adventure Allianz Travel Insurance
Hot air balloon No
Scuba diving Yes, unless at a depth greater than 20 metres or without a dive master
Skiing, other snow sports Yes, unless outside marked trails or in areas accessed by helicopter
Hiking, trekking Yes
Mountaineering, outdoor rock climbing No
Marathons, competitions No
Jet ski Yes
White water rafting Yes
Skydiving No
Paragliding, hang gliding, parachute No
Bungee jumping No
Helicopter sightseeing No

As you can see, the plan excludes a great deal of adventure activities, including all high altitude activities like helicopter rides and hot air balloons. It is thus more suited to travellers whose idea of an exciting afternoon involves shopping malls or museums.

5. Allianz Travel Insurance Promotion

As luck would have it, Allianz is running a current travel insurance promotion.

Until 3 October 2022 they are offering 12% off all travel insurance plans with the promo code travel12.

6. Allianz Travel Insurance Claim Review

You can submit your travel insurance claims online here.

If you are travelling and need help, you can call Allianz travel insurance’s 24-hour emergency hotline at +65 327 2215.

There have been some reviews complaining about Allianz’s claims process being nitpicky. To avoid getting your claim rejected, it is highly recommended that you call their emergency hotline to obtain clarification about what documents you need to submit.

7. Should I buy Allianz Travel Insurance?

The Allianz Travel Insurance plan is a fairly basic one.

Coverage limits are pretty average compared to the competition, but the plan is quite stingy as it does not cover outdoor activities or give a hospitalisation cash benefit. That would be okay if it was a budget plan but it’s actually fairly expensive.

The verdict? The value for money offered by this plan is not great.
