Read the news on any given day and you’re sure to see an article about a traffic accident, whether it be a pile-up on the PIE or a car turned turtle.
In 2018 alone, there were 7,690 road traffic accidents that resulted in injuries. And judging by the way some people drive, that’s not surprising.
If you’ve never been involved in a car accident before, the most common response is to panic when it does happen to you. This is especially bad if you are the driver, as you need to ensure you keep a record of all the details needed to make a successful car insurance claim.
In a best-case scenario, your passenger turns out to be a car insurance specialist and can talk you through all the steps you need to take before leaving the scene of the accident. However, could we be that lucky?
So, your next best option is to make sure you have a car insurance policy that offers you the assurance that everything will be taken care of.
Here are some ways a good car insurance policy can benefit you.
1. It helps you get your priorities straight
Many people avoid making claims from their insurers when they get into a car accident as they are afraid they will lose their No Claim Discount (NCD). But not being able to make a claim defeats the whole purpose of having car insurance.
Instead, look for car insurance with a low NCD penalty, so you are not forced to avoid making claims. That way, you will be able to confidently call your insurer within 24 hours in order to report an accident, rather than put it off for too long and lose your chance to make a claim.
Here’s an easy way to remember what you need to do — AKA the 4Cs of a successful car insurance claim:
2. A helping hand, available 24/7
Your insurer should be there to hold your hand when you get into an accident. So, look for one with a 24-hour helpline.
When you get into an accident, call your insurer immediately, and depending on the situation, someone might be dispatched to help you at the scene. Your insurer will also be able to offer advice as to what you should do at the scene of the accident and what information you need to document.
3. Having access to an emergency notification system
When you get into trouble, it is not always that easy to get help. There are some sensors on the market that automatically notify emergency services, such as those found in GPS-equipped crash detection devices. However, not everyone has such a device.
In that case, if your insurer offers you a smart sensor device that is linked to an emergency assistance team, take it. That way, you know you’ll be able to get help no matter what.
4. Brand new car replacement, workshop access
The aftermath of your accident can be even more of a hassle if your car has to be sent to a workshop for repairs. So, get a car insurance plan that offers you access to a workshop, or better yet, your preferred workshop. Check the limitations so you know exactly what you are entitled to.
It’s also a good idea to make sure your car insurance offers you a brand new car replacement if your car gets totalled or stolen. Alternatively, if your car is undergoing repairs, you’ll want an insurance policy that gives you access to a temporary car or enables you to make transport claims.
5. Bye bye excess
Car insurance excess is the amount you need to pay out of pocket before you are able to make a claim. Insurers may impose additional excess amounts if you are a young and inexperienced driver, or for specific types of repairs such as windscreen repairs.
Getting car insurance without excess makes it a lot less nerve-racking to let newly-minted drivers like your son or daughter take the wheel. And if you recently got your drivers’ licence, not having to worry about paying excess will give you greater peace of mind.
