Cameras are really costly. If you need a quality camera only for special occasions like a scuba-diving trip, shooting your best friend’s pre-wedding photoshoot, or a school film project, renting from camera rental shops may be wiser than buying.

So where are the best places in Singapore to rent cameras and lenses?

Camera Rental Centre Singapore (CRC Singapore)

CRC is one of the most recognised camera equipment rental shops in Singapore with raving reviews and high ratings on their products and services.

They offer a large array of cameras for rent, especially for professional use, as well as an extensive list of support equipment like drones, tripods, microphones, lights and so on. They own 99% of their equipment and are very responsible for them.

CRC has a photo equipment rental office at South Bridge Road and a video equipment rental office at the CT Hub building along Lavender Street. There’s also a studio rental space available at Kallang Junction.

Apparently, customer service is good. If you are unsure of how to operate the camera after renting it home, their staff would be willing to guide you step by step over the phone.

You can collect the equipment 1 day before and return 1 day after your booking date. That allows you time to check and familiarise yourself with the equipment before your shoot without having to pay extra.

All equipment are cleaned and checked before renting out. You can also get your equipment delivered to your preferred location for as low as $10.

Prices wise, they are not the cheapest but for their reliable and quality services, it is very reasonable. They have one of the largest inventory in town so you’ll be sure to find what you need. Plus, the longer you rent, the cheaper is the per day rental fee. They also have on-going promotions that give discounts for rental of more than 1 item.

On your birthday month, you even get $30 off your rental. For first time customers, you get a 20% off your first rental.

Camwerkz

Located at Commonwealth Drive, Camwerkz has been around for more than 10 years and customers who have used their services have really positive reviews on them.

Compared to CRC, Camwerkz has a more limited range of cameras but are still well stocked with various brands including Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, Pentax, etc. There’s no lack of support equipment and accessories including the Easyrig Vario (a body-worn support system for cameras), drones and cranes.

Camwerkz offer packages designed for comprehensive productions that require the full set-up from lights to audio equipment to cameras. For those working on a tighter budget, there’s also an economic production package that will provide more cost-efficient and suitable equipment to meet your needs.

Similar to CRC, you can collect your equipment 1 day before (4-6pm on weekdays, 1-3pm on weekends) and return 1 day after (at 10.30am) your booking date. However, they don’t provide delivery services.

Apart from equipment rental, Camwerkz also offer lens servicing and calibration services. There’s also a photo video studio at Commonwealth for rent.

EZ Lens Rental

EZ Lens is started by two photography enthusiasts who used to rent camera equipment themselves when they first started out and later began to collect their own equipment. Through this business, they hope to share their equipment with like-minded individuals and make friends. As such, EZ Lens has comparatively lesser equipment available for rent and focus mainly on Nikon and Canon DSLR cameras and lenses.

EZ Lens is loved by their customers for their flexibility. Equipment can be delivered to more than 100 locations to your nearest MRT station at your convenient timing (there’s still a general guideline of time periods, you can’t collect your equipment at 3 am obviously).

The same works for returning equipment. There’s no need to worry about making it back to a rental shop during office hours. Based on feedback, they are also known to be very punctual. You can make reservations via email, phone, message, Facebook and even Carousell.

The profile of their customers lean towards students, amateurs and photo/video enthusiasts. Many of the customers who rented used it for their holiday trips.

Customers who rented from them once tend to prefer sticking to them for future rentals. This is because with more rentals, you can quality for membership status and get member price for rentals. There’s also a 50% off the total rental amount on your birthday month.

Other member benefits include free sharing sessions organised by EZ Lens, a one time free private session on photography and videography, and a one-time chance to claim one of the following benefits:

  • One time door to door collection and return for free
  • One time 20% off rental above $100
  • One time 50% off one item less than $30
  • One time free tripod/reflector rental for rental above $100 (subject to availability)

J Rental Centre

J Rental Centre (JRC) links up with freelance photographers and videographers who can then list their own camera equipment for rental on JRC’s website. Founded in 2015, they are the first in Singapore to provide such peer-to-peer services.

JRC probably offers the most extensive list of rental items (latest count at 2220 gears for rent via 158 partners) since they don’t actually own the equipment. Plus, without a physical store and overhead costs such as office space rental and staff costs, their prices are significantly cheaper compared to other rental stores.

JRC aims to provide for students and small productions, hence their affordable prices and convenience. To rent, you can first browse through their list of DSLR cameras, lenses, video cameras, lights and sound equipment on their website. Next, you select the items you want to rent and the rental dates to get a quote. Lastly, book the gear and arrange details separately with the owner of the equipment you wish to rent. You can also request for delivery of equipment at additional cost if you wish to do so.

JRC’s business has expanded over the years and now offers event logistics (things like speakers, monitors and power extension reel drums) and creative spaces rental too. You can even hire a full production crew for your video projects.
