Paediatricians in Singapore (2019): Consultation Fees at Top Kids’ Clinics

paediatricians in singapore

Few things worry a parent as much as when a child falls ill. The younger the child, the greater the worry, especially since they can’t talk yet and won’t be able to tell you exactly where it hurts.

The fear also comes from horror stories you hear of little ones felled by seemingly innocent coughs and colds. Having a family paediatrician can set your heart at ease.

Going to polyclinic vs a private paediatrician

How should you choose between a private paediatrician and a private GP, or a polyclinic GP?

Well, technically, every baby is assigned with a paediatrician after delivery. The gynaecologist who delivered your baby will refer someone, probably from the same hospital, to check on your baby before he or she is discharged. After that, it’s your choice if you want to return to the hospital to see this paediatrician.

One main difference between private and public healthcare is the cost. The consultation fees at a polyclinic range between $6.90 and $15, and medication is subsidised. Consultation with a PD starts from $80 (repeat visits), so it’s definitely no small expense. Consultation with a private GP lies somewhere in between.

If you go to a PD, you will be paying for the experience of someone specialised in the care of children. Usually, they work in kids’ clinics that are typically designed to distract and entertain young children so that check-ups can be done in the least traumatic way.

While it used to be that it takes ages to see a doctor at polyclinics, these days the facilities and services are much better. Sometimes you won’t have to wait as long to see a doctor as with ultra popular paediatricians like Dr Eugene Han. You can also book online to pick a time so that you don’t have to wait at the polyclinic with your sick babe.

Plus, you may come across specialised rooms designed for kids’ vaccination at polyclinics that are as colourful and well-designed as private kids’ clinics. Compulsory vaccinations against diseases such as Hepatitis B, MMR, Tuberculosis, are fully subsidised at polyclinics as well. The nurses who administer these vaccinations will also do free developmental checks.

Generally, if it is a routine wellness check and vaccination, the nurses and GPs at polyclinics are just as good as any PD. It’s also ok for your garden variety cough and cold.

If your baby is especially frail (born premature, has congenital health issues or has been sick for a while), you may feel more secure with a trusted PD that you establish a family relationship with.

Generally, the younger the child, the more you want someone who is adept at caring for little ones. By K1 or K2, your child can start going for a private GP or a polyclinic.
