Dragon Boat Festival is just around the corner, and during this time of the year, it’s common to see long lines of aunties queuing for rice dumplings. But this year, given the circumstances, you might want to get them delivered instead. From old school bak zhangs to high end hotel rice dumplings à la atas, here are 12 places you can get yours to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival on 25 June.

Ho Kee Bak Zhang has been in the business of making dumplings for 68 years. They’ve got flavours such as pork chestnut; salted egg yolk with pork and chestnut; mushroom pork and chestnut and a deluxe all-in, which is basically a melange of all the flavours. Prices range from $3 for the basic pork chestnut dumpling to $5 for the deluxe all-in.

You can either place an order on their website and have your order delivered between 12pm to 3pm on Mondays to Saturdays, or opt to self-collect at their shop from 12pm to 3pm on Mondays to Saturdays. At the time of writing, the next earliest date for pick up or delivery is 1 July 2020.

30 years ago, Lim Cheng Hwee’s grandma perfected the art of making nyonya rice dumplings and Eastern Rice Dumpling was born. The family recipe has been passed down three generations and spawned delicious nyonya, hokkien and cantonese dumplings. 

Their range includes flavours such as XO salted egg rice, black pepper chicken rice and black-eyed bean. Most of the regular-sized meat dumplings are priced at $3.55 to $5.14, while the vegetarian dumplings are $2.99.

Order online by 3pm for delivery on the next working day at the earliest. When you place your order on their website, you will be prompted to select a date for delivery or collection.

They deliver islandwide and charge a flat fee of $12 for a minimum order of $50. Orders above $100 get free delivery, except from 23 to 25 June, when you have to order at least $300 worth to enjoy free delivery. Self-collection is available for orders worth at least $40 for those who wish to avoid delivery charges.

Kim Choo Kueh Chang’s hand-wrapped dumplings are in high demand during Dragon Boat Festival, so order early to avoid disappointment. Their flavours include classic Nyonya pork dumplings, traditional salty dumplings with or without salted egg and kee chang. Their regular-sized dumplings are priced at $4.50 to $5.50 during the Dragon Boat Festival period.

Delivery costs $10 or free with a minimum order of $30. You can also opt to self collect.

 

Joo Chiat Kim Choo

This dumpling brand, which had its roots in Joo Chiat, has chicken nonya, Cantonese bean rice, chicken salted rice and chicken salted egg yolk dumplings. Individual dumplings are priced at $4.50 to $6. Or opt for a bundle of 10 for certain flavours, starting from $57.50. 

Their main outlet is at the Ang Mo Kio Central Market and Food Centre and their dumplings are also available at selected Fairprice outlets and umisushi outlets. 

Delivery costs $15, or free for orders worth at least $65. 

 

Hiong Kee Dumplings, Hong Lim

Hiong Kee has been making dumplings for more than 40 years and their stall at Hong Lim Food Centre is quite famous.

They’ve got pork rice and chicken rice dumplings, both with or without salted egg yolk. Other offerings include Nyonya rice dumplings, pork belly rick dumplings, red bean kee chang and regular kee chang. Their Dragon Boat seasonal prices range from $4.70 to $5.40.

The catch is that they no longer accept advance orders or do deliveries. You’ll have to visit their stall at Hong Lim Food Centre on Mondays to Saturdays and take away the dumplings by yourself.

They stay open until they’re sold out for the day, which usually happens quite early during Dragon Boat Festival season, so turn up early to avoid disappointment.

Dumplings on the menu include traditional nonya, traditional vegetarian and traditional vegetarian Nonya. These cost from $19 to $20 for a bundle of 5 dumplings. Do note that these are the selections and prices available until 13 June only. They are likely to change as the Dragon Boat Festival approaches.

They offer free delivery for orders worth at least $35, and you’ll be asked to pick a delivery date upon checkout. They only deliver to certain postcodes on certain dates, so check their delivery schedule here if you need your dumplings urgently.

BreadTalk has rolled out a concoction known as the double delight dumpling just for the Dragon Boat Festival. It’s filled with minced pork, green bean paste filling and glutinous rice, and will be delivered chilled.

These aren’t just regular rice dumplings, they’re premium handcrafted ones and available only until 25 June. This restaurant is offering Cantonese-style dumplings in flavours such as abalone, roasted meat, dried scallops and beans. They’ve also got two special nutritious flavours, namely pork bone cartilage and homemade XO sauce rice dumplings and vegetarian brown rice dumplings with wild mushrooms and black truffles.

Do note that these are early bird prices, and the dumplings will cost $18.80 to $32.80 once the discount has expired.
