Suspect That You Have STD Symptoms? Cost of STD Tests & Clinics in Singapore

std symptoms std test singapore at clinics

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are not exactly the most appetising topic to debate at the dinner table, and usually elicit an “eww” before someone hastily tries to change the subject.

But anyone who is sexually active should know about common STD symptoms and be prepared to go to an STD clinic for testing.

The, er, silver lining is that STD testing isn’t that expensive as many clinics are subsidised.

Do you suspect that you have STD symptoms?

There’s a whole smorgasbord of STD symptoms you could potentially suffer. To make matters worse, some STDs don’t really have any symptoms, or have symptoms that are so mild that you (or a partner) might not even realise you have them.

Here are some common symptoms that we hope you will never suffer, but that you should look out for nonetheless:

  • Pain when urinating
  • Discharge and/or bleeding
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Pain or swelling in the abdomen or testicles
  • Itching or irritation in the genital area
  • Bumps, swelling or warts in the genital area

Signs of HIV infection tend to affect the whole body rather than just the genital area, and might include:

  • Fever or chills
  • Headache
  • Sore throat and/or cough
  • Rash
  • Diarrhoea
  • Painless sores
  • Fatigue
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Swollen lymph glands
  • Night sweats
  • Unexplained infections

STD screening – who should go for it?

Feeling queasy already? Don’t shun away if you really do suffer from the above STD symptoms.

So long as you have or have had sexual relations with multiple people outside of a long-term relationship, it’s a good idea to go for regular STD testing even if you are asymptomatic.

If you spot any symptoms despite having only one partner, you might want to consider going to a clinic too, as it’s not uncommon for people to get an STD from a partner who has frequented sex workers, for example.

And of course, if you experience any suspicious symptoms, it doesn’t hurt to get tested.

Here’s what to expect for specific STD tests:

  • Screening for syphilis: This is usually done in the form of a blood test.
  • Screening for gonorrhoea and chlamydia: Women in particular should get screened for this. Testing is typically done through a urine test or swab.
  • Screening for Hepatitis B: This is usually done in the form of a blood test.
  • Anonymous HIV testing in Singapore: This can be done without your having to give out your NRIC number, contact details or other information. There are rapid tests that can give a result within 20 minutes, and conventional blood tests that produce results in up to two weeks.
  • Screening for genital herpes: This can be done done through a tissue sample or by scraping sores, or through a blood test.

What most people do is get a general STD screening, also available anonymously.

Are there free STD clinics in Singapore?

The short answer is, no.

You can usually expect to pay about $80 to $140 for a first screening at an STD clinic with subsidised prices.

However, you don’t need to go to an STD clinic to get tested. Any regular GP can administer a full STD screening. So going to a polyclinic would be much cheaper than visiting a private GP.

And if you are entitled to free or subsidised doctors’ visits, such as through CHAS subsidies or your employer’s reimbursement for medical expenses, it might make more sense to go to a clinic where you can enjoy these benefits.

Does *cough* a friend of yours have any STD clinics to recommend? Leave them in the comments!
