1. What is car sharing in Singapore?

Let’s start with the basics. Car sharing differs from traditional car rental even though these terms often get thrown around interchangeably.

The beauty of car-sharing services is the convenience. You book your ride through an app, head to the vehicle (usually at an HDB car park), unlock it, and drive off. It operates similarly to an automotive Airbnb, where you have online booking, digital access, app guidance, and help at your fingertips.

In contrast, renting a car from traditional car rental joints involves speaking to a salesperson, booking your dates, showing up at their spot, and filling out paperwork and insurance—you get the drift.

2. What is GetGo car sharing?

By now, GetGo is a well-known player in Singapore’s car-sharing scene as they have been cruising since 25 Feb 2021. Their vehicles are hard to miss with their eye-catching decals, especially on weekends.

GetGo hit the road with a 400-strong fleet of Mazda 3 sedans, SsangYong Tivolis, and Toyota Sientas and have since expanded to over 3,000 vehicles across more than 1,600 locations across Singapore. Their lineup now consists of multiple electric vehicles and luxury cars from BMW, Mercedes, and Lexus.

GetGo is a point A-to-A service, meaning you pick up and return the car at the same parking lot. It’s perfect for running errands, going on road trips, date nights, etc. Don’t use it as your ride to the airport (unless you’re just ferrying someone there or fetching someone home).

3. GetGo Price: How much does GetGo cost?

The pricing structure may seem complicated at first, but it’s actually pretty straightforward.

There are 3 fees to pay every time you make a booking:

1) Hourly rental fee

The rental fees differ based on the car category you book.

Premium: Kia Optima K5, Lexus CT200H, Audi A3, and more

As you can see, the hourly fee changes based on whether you’re booking off-peak, normal, or peak. Here’s how the timing brackets are classified:

2) Mileage fee

The mileage fee is fixed at S$0.39 per km for regular cars and S$0.29 per km for electric vehicles.

But vehicles under the luxury category are the exception; you’ll pay an extra S$0.10 per km.

3) Platform fee

This one’s simple. The platform fee for GetGo is a flat rate of 80 cents.

4. Case example: How much would a trip from Tiong Bahru to IKEA Alexandra cost?

I just visited IKEA Alexandra in September 2023, as I needed some ~~meatballs~~ furniture.

I booked the Toyota Raize, under the Standard category, for my journey to IKEA Alexandra from Tiong Bahru. The trip lasted 2 hours and 14 mins from 7:30 pm to 9:44 pm, meaning that the rental period was between normal and peak timings.

The total cost of my trip was S$24.52. A round-trip cab ride could cost anywhere between $32-40.

You might notice 2 fees here that you didn’t see in the above section: extension and end trip fees. At the start of your booking process, you are required to specify how long you intend to book your car. If you realise that you need to use the car past the stipulated return time, you must manually extend your booking in the app. The extension is subject to vehicle availability. You won’t be able to extend your booking if there’s already another booking after yours or the vehicle has been scheduled for service maintenance.

You might be thinking: “Why can’t I just continue driving the car? I’m already in it, right?” Sure, you can—at a late return fee of $50 per hour.

Don’t be alarmed by the end trip fee; that isn’t a hidden cost. It consists of the mileage fee and the Collision Damage Waiver (explained below).

5. GetGo’s Electric Vehicle Fleet

Some of you might be interested in driving an electric vehicle (EV) for the first time. You’d be pleased to know that GetGo has 7 EVs you can take for a spin across 3 categories:

I’ve personally driven the Hyundai Kona EV multiple times—it’s my vehicle of choice for quick trips. I love its futuristic look, smooth drive, and the fact that I’m making a greener choice. Here are some pictures of my ride.

I paid just S$13.87 for a 1-hour drive to the park for a Sunday stroll and back.

But the star of GetGo’s EV lineup is, of course, the Polestar 2. This handsome EV is guaranteed to impress your date. It has a classy interior, an easy-to-use Google infotainment setup, and delivers an excellent drive. It’s one of the most innovative EVs today and is considered a major competitor to Tesla.

Be prepared to shell out extra moolah for the Polestar 2, as it’s categorised under Luxury Electric.

6. Do I have to pump petrol or charge up when using GetGo?

It doesn’t happen often, but occasionally, you’ll end up with a car that has low battery or fuel. I’ve used GetGo countless times and only had to pump petrol thrice before (maybe I’m lucky).

Here’s how it works:

Pumping petrol

Find the Esso fuel card on the sun visor of your GetGo car
Tap “Refuel Now” on the GetGo app to get a 4-digit PIN
Head to your nearest Esso petrol station
Use the Esso fuel card at the top-up kiosk and key in your PIN code when asked
Fuel the car with Synergy Extra or Diesel (depending on the car model)
You’re done! Make sure you keep the receipt
GetGo will even throw in a sweet promo code as a reward for fueling up the car

EV Charging

If your battery is below 50% at the end of your booking, you just need to park your car at the designated charging spot, plug the charger in, and let it recharge.

But if you need to charge on the go, fire up your GetGo app to locate nearby charging partner spots like CDG ENGIE, CHARGE+, and ChargEco and leave it to charge while you take care of errands.

Charging the EV is completely free, and GetGo will offer you a promo code as a reward for recharging the EV.

7. What happens if I damage the GetGo car?

If you damage the vehicle or get into an accident, you’ll need to pay for it.

At the beginning and end of your drive, you’ll be asked to take clear pictures of all four sides of the vehicle (you can take multiple photos to capture all angles of the vehicle). So if you damage the car, GetGo will know.

When taking photos of the vehicle at the end of your trip, the GetGo app will ask if there is damage to the car. Simply report the damage (e.g., scratches, dents, etc.) through the app and describe how and where the damage occurred (e.g., backed into the carpark wall at Plaza Singapura, etc.). The customer support team will reach out to you.

Depending on the damage and whether you are at fault, you may get a bill for the damages. Keep in mind that failing to report at-fault vehicle damage may lead to an administrative fee of up to $800 for any investigation that leads to you being found liable for damage.

In the event that you get into an accident during your drive, you’ll need to call 995 for any injuries, exchange details with other parties, and take photos of the vehicle damages. If there are any injuries or damage to government property, you’ll need to also call the police and make a report. You’ll then need to tap the ‘Report an Accident’ button on the app’s booking page. FLASH will also be activated to reach out to meet you at either the accident site or an address of your convenience to take statements and make a report on the accident.

If the accident investigation determines that you were at fault, you will receive a bill for the damages caused. This bill may include additional fees for towing and loss of use. Loss of use refers to the number of days the vehicle will be unavailable for other users while being repaired.

Basic car insurance comes standard with every booking. However, you can upgrade to the Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) insurance programme for an additional 5% of your booking fee. This can reduce your insurance excess by 50% if you get into an accident. I always opt for this—just in case.

8. Are P-Plates allowed to drive GetGo?

Yes, you are allowed to use the GetGo service. Just remember to bring along your P-Plate and stick it to the car during your drive. And don’t forget to take it with you after finishing your booking.

I strongly advise you to add the CDW, as it’ll help reduce your insurance excess in case you get into an accident. It also won’t hurt to bring a seasoned driver buddy to tag along for the ride.

10. Last words: Is GetGo worth it?

I can’t imagine life without GetGo. I feel like I own about 4 cars. And yet, I don’t have to deal with the exorbitant costs that come with car ownership in Singapore.

So yes, GetGo is worth it. It’s perfect for scenic drives, adventures around Singapore, and running errands. It’s not a good idea for those looking for long-term car rental solutions, though, as the longest you can rent a car for is 5 days.

GetGo is perfect for my needs as plenty of cars are available across many locations in Singapore. There’s even the option to drive some luxury EVs (Polestar 2, I’m coming for you).
