Berlin, Germany

Berlin is arguably Europe’s hippest capital of the moment. Its also filled with reminders of sobering moments in history, such as the remnants of the Berlin Wall and the Jewish Museum.

Costs are generally a bit lower than what you’d expect in a big Western European capital. A meal in an inexpensive eatery will set you back an average of about 8 euro (12 SGD), while a mid-range one will cost about 20 euro (31 SGD). A pint of draft beer costs about 3.50 euro (5 SGD).

Thanks to a new direct flight from Singapore to Berlin, it’s now more affordable than ever to make a trip to Germany’s cultural capital.

Accommodation at a 3-star hotel: $150 per night

Once thought of as an exotic destination, Moscow is seeing more and more Singaporean tourists. The wow-factor for a first time visitor to Moscow is clear, with massive spectacles like the imposing Red Square and the candy-coloured Saint Basil’s Cathedral being just the tip of the iceburg.

A meal at an inexpensive eatery costs just 600 rubles (12 SGD) and a mid-range restaurant meal about 1,250 rubles (26 SGD). Beer is cheap and abundant, with a pint of domestic beer at a bar costing about 150 rubles (3 SGD).

With Singapore Airlines offering direct flights, you can potentially get to Moscow under 12 hours. If you don’t mind making a stop at Istanbul Dubai or Doha, you could potentially get cheap flights to Moscow for slightly over $1,000.

Do note that Singaporeans need a visa for traveling to Moscow.

Singaporeans are always on the lookout for nearby destinations for a weekend getaway, and after having done most of Southeast Asia’s major tourist spots, are now heading to Kuching, Sarawak’s cat city, with its charming temples and waterfront, as well as its proximity to the jungles of Borneo.

Even by Malaysian standards, Kuching is inexpensive. You can enjoy an inexpensive meal for as little as 8 MYR (2.60 SGD) or dine at a mid-range restaurant for 23 MYR (7.60 SGD)

Cost of return flight from Singapore to Kuching: $87 direct flight via Scoot, excluding baggage (March 2019)

If you travel to Europe for history rather than shopping, the ancient ruins of Athens, steeped in mythology, will be a treat. Like Berlin, Athens has become one of the more common European cities that Singaporeans visit thanks to a direct flight offered by Scoot.

Enjoy an inexpensive meal for about 10 euro (15.50 SGD), or 20 euro (31 SGD) if you prefer to go mid-range. Meanwhile, you’ll pay 4 euro (6 SGD) for a pint of local draught.

The MassKara festival with its colourful masks has no doubt raised Bacolod’s profile. With good food, historic attractions, friendly people and a good safety record, it’s one of the easiest gateways into the Philippines.

An inexpensive restaurant meal will cost you about 100 pesos (2. 60 SGD), while a mid-range one is more in the region of 294 pesos (7.60 SGD).

Cost of return flight from Singapore to Bacolod: $369 1-stop flight via Cebu Pacific (March 2019)

Hiroshima looks like any other big Japanese city, but its main draw for visitors is its place in history. The bombing of Hiroshima has given rise to many reminders of the ills of war, including the Peace Memorial Park and numerous museums.

An inexpensive bowl of ramen costs about 850 yen (10.50 SGD), while a litre of draught domestic beer costs about 430 yen (5.30 SGD). Expect to pay about 1,750 yen (22 SGD) for a mid-range restaurant meal.

Cost of return flight from Singapore to Hiroshima: $619 via 1-stop flight via China Airlines (March 2019)

Accommodation at a 3-star hotel: $80 per night

Jinjiang, located in Fujian, is an industrial city that is a surprise entry on this list of Singapore’s most searched-for destinations. Its popularity is probably due to its use as a springboard to Quanzhou, a coastal city with a prominent position on the Maritime Silk Road.

In Quanzhou, you can eat inexpensively for as little as 15 RMB (3 SGD), or 75 RMB (15 SGD) if you prefer mid-range restaurants. Drink up, as a pint of domestic draught beer costs just 6 RMB (1.20 SGD).

Cost of return flight from Singapore to Jinjiang: $238 direct flight via Scoot, excluding baggage (May 2019)

Accommodation at a 3-star hotel: $60 per night

The West Sumatran capital is a gateway to popular surfing spots at Bungus Bay and off the Mentawai Islands, and is also a access point to the Kerinci Seblat National Park with its UNESCO Heritage-listed rainforest and volcanos.

A street food meal costs about 20,000 rupiah (1.90 SGD), while a mid-range restaurant meal in a shopping mall will cost you about 5,000 rupiah (4.90 SGD).

Blame Game of Thrones, but Singaporeans have been flocking in droves to Dubrovnik, with its UNESCO-listed city centre, stunning coastal surroundings and of course GOT filming sites.

As the city is rather touristy, it’s a bit more expensive than the rest of Croatia. A meal at an inexpensive restaurant will cost about 60 kuna (12.50 SGD), with a mid-range 3-course meal costing about 140 kuna (29 SGD) per person.

Cost of return flight from Singapore to Croatia: $1,330 1-stop flight via Turkish Airlines (April 2019)

Accommodation at a 3-star hotel: $140 per night

With its vast plains, bitterly cold winters and the world’s lowest national population density, Mongolia is the opposite of Singapore, who could explain its growing popularity as a travel destination. Ulaanbaatar, the capital, is a convenient starting point due to the availability of flights.

With an inexpensive meal costing as little as 6,000 MNT (3.30 SGD), and a litre of draft beer 4,900 MNT (2.50 SGD), Ulaanbaatar is also a relatively affordable destination.

Cost of return flight from Singapore to Ulaanbaatar: $1,304 1-stop flight via Cathay Pacific (February 2019)

Accommodation at a 3-star hotel: $80 per night
