Nothing ruins your day faster than receiving a traffic/parking fine. Whether you knowingly or unknowingly violated one of the Land Transport Authority’s (LTA) sacred road violations – it doesn’t’ matter. That’s because either way, you’re still going to have to fork over the cash to pay the fine.

If you’ve dealt with an LTA enforcement officer before, you know that no amount of lying, pleading ignorance or begging will get you off the hook. Once you’ve been busted, there’s no escaping the ticket.

So if you want to avoid the financial pain of a road violation ticket, be mindful of the following 3 LTA road violations:

1. Ignoring the Bus Lane Schemes

Fine Cost: Maximum fine of $1,000 or 3 months of imprisonment

There’s nothing worse than dealing with stop-and-go traffic in the morning when you’re rushing to get to work on time. It’s always the same story – every lane is packed with drivers trying to out-kiasu each other to get ahead.

It’s tempting to use the near-empty bus lanes to get to work faster. You might even have used the bus lane numerous times without getting caught – but your luck won’t last forever. You’ll get caught eventually, either through bus lane cameras on board buses or by an LTA enforcement officer.

Don’t drive, stop, or pick up/drop off passengers in the bus lane (Normal and Full-Day) during restricted hours! The only time you can enter the bus lane during operation hours is when the lane is dotted, which allows you to filter into the lane and make a turn.

Here are the operating hours for both normal and full-day bus lane schemes:

Days Operation Hours (Normal) Operation Hours (Full-Day)
Mon-Fri 7:30am-9:30am & 5:00pm-8:00pm 7:30am-8:00pm
Saturday N/A 7:30am-8:00pm
Sunday & Public Holidays N/A N/A

Here are the vehicles that are allowed/not allowed in the bus lane during operation hours:

Vehicles Allowed Vehicles Not Allowed
Buses (Scheduled & Non-Scheduled) Taxis
Emergency Vehicles Passenger Vehicles
Police Vehicles Vans
Bicycles Motorcycles

2. Illegal Parking (Public Roads)

Fine Cost: Maximum fine up to $300 (depending on vehicle category) and 3-4 demerit points on your license

Seriously, the only true place where you won’t get fined is in a parking lot. Well, that’s not entirely true, as #3 covers fines you can get for illegal parking violations in a parking lot – but you get the idea right?

Anyway, the only way to avoid a ticket for illegally parking on a public road is just to forget about parking anywhere near a public road! Find the nearest parking lot and just walk to your destination from there.

Here are some of the violations you may not know about that’ll get you ticketed for illegal parking on a public road:

  • It’s illegal to park at all times within 9 meters of a bus stop.
  • It’s illegal to park at all times within 6 meters of a traffic junction.
  • It’s illegal to park at all times within 3 meters of a fire hydrant.
  • It’s illegal to park at all times within a pedestrian crossing.
  • It’s illegal to park or stop abreast o another vehicle at all times.

There are plenty more illegal parking (public roads) violations than the ones above. To see the full list, click here.

*Note: LTA defines “parking” as anything other than stopping briefly to pick up/drop off passengers, goods, or luggage.

3. Illegal Parking (Coupon/Season Parking Places)

Fine Cost: Varies according to violation and vehicle class ($25-$400)

Yes, you’re not safe from being fined, even at a parking lot. Of course, in this instance, I’m talking about coupon/season parking lots.

Here are some of the violations you may not know about that’ll get you ticketed for illegal parking in a coupon/season parking lot:

  • It’s illegal to repair/allow repair of a motor vehicle in a parking space.
  • It’s illegal to parallel park in the opposite direction of oncoming traffic. Don’t ask why.
  • It’s illegal to park beyond the boundaries of a parking space.
  • It’s illegal to park and sell anything out of your car.
  • It’s illegal to wash/allow your car to be washed in a parking space.
  • It’s illegal to display a season parking ticket that has been altered or tampered with.

Honestly, there are plenty of other parking violations aside from what’s above. To see the full list, click here.

Final Note: The violations above aren’t the only violations that’ll have LTA chasing you with a ticket. Illegal vehicle modifications can also be a quite costly – with fines up to $1,000 or 3 months of imprisonment. “It’s illegal to parallel park in the opposite direction of oncoming traffic. Don’t ask why.”
    (a) To park against the flow of traffic you have to first drive against the flow of traffic.
    (b) Very often, when I see a parking lot on the opposite lane, I had to drive up to look for a U-turn to go to the lot but find that omeone had taken the lot by parking against the traffic.

LTA consent the use of public road for F1
They earn out of Singaporean hard earned money

LTA needs to be brought in by the public for a judiciary review. They bully lots of vehicle users but allow illegal parking up to 5 times a day when visitors visit the mosque all over Singapore; illegal parking in private estates are rampant and causing potential fatal or serious accident to occur.
They are not making the roads any safer. LTA is simply robbing singaporeans

“It’s illegal to parallel park in the opposite direction of oncoming traffic. Don’t ask why.”

Well, you were driving against the flow of traffic to park and when you leave, you will drive against the flow of traffic.

“it is illegal to wash/allow to wash your car in a parking lot.” Are you serious????

It’s illegal to park at roads with 1 single white line in the centre. Even if the driver is in the vehicle. I got a fine which was waived off near Jalan Perminpin coffeeshop area. The one at the corner right near the bungalows.
