Standard Chartered’s latest credit card comes in the form of a rewards card with some attractive lifestyle benefits as well. While many might think that rewards credit cards are a thing of the past, they are still a great way to accrue air miles if used in the right way. Here’s an overview of what the card offers and who it would be beneficial for:

Summary of the Standard Chartered Rewards+ Credit Card benefits

Similar to other rewards cards in the market, Standard Chartered’s Rewards+ Credit Card has different tiers of reward points accrual rates. Here’s a summary of the current offerings:

  • $1 = 1X rewards point for normal spend (0.29 air miles)
  • $1 = Up to 5X1 rewards points for local dining spend (1.45 air miles)
  • $1 = Up to 10X1 rewards points for foreign currency spend (2.9 air miles)

Many cards offer 10X rewards points but what does it really equate to in terms of air miles? Based on up to 10X Rewards Points awarded for every $1 spent in foreign currency, Standard Chartered Rewards+ Cardholders can redeem 1,015 Krisflyer airmiles using 3,500 Rewards Points which will be awarded with $350 spent in foreign currency.

Just note that there is a yearly cap of 20,000 rewards points imposed on additional rewards points awarded for dining transactions and foreign currency spend, which means that if you are using your card for an overseas trip, it would be great for a short family getaway where $2,000 might encompass overseas expenditure and maybe accommodation, earning you the equivalent of 5,700 air miles.

But what else can 20,000 rewards points get you? Here are some of our top picks:

Benefits Points Needed
The Ultimate Spa $100 voucher 8,400
Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel $50 dining voucher 10,500
Samsung Experience Store $50 voucher 12,500

What other benefits does the card offer?

The card has other lifestyle benefits apart from their 5X multiplier on local dining spend. From 1 May 2018 till 31 March 2019, you can enjoy up to 50% off à la carte dining at all 9 dining establishments at The Fullerton Hotel and The Fullerton Bay Hotel Singapore.

This includes acclaimed dining establishments such as the elegant La Brasserie Restaurant and timeless Jade Restaurant which offers a modern take on oriental dining, which is a great option for couples who want to enjoy a nice date night out.

To wrap up a lovely evening out, you can also get 1-for-1 Platinum Movie Suites Tickets at Cathay Cineplexes. This is valid for the first 1,500 redemptions. So if you’ve been waiting to take your significant other out for a special night, now’s definitely a good time.

Apart from all this, Standard Chartered is offering up to $120 cashback* upon card activation for all new Standard Chartered Credit Card applications. You get $100 once your card is activated and another $20 cashback if you make your first 5 qualifying mobile wallet transactions via Apple Pay, Samsung Pay or Android Pay.

In summary

Earning accelerated rewards points on overseas spending is definitely a bonus, and this is one of the cards that can bring you closer to your next holiday. Apart from that, the lifestyle rewards such as the dining discounts which you can enjoy throughout the year are a great bonus.
